| Assc. Prof. MUAMMER BOZKURT ‘’THE BOSPHORUS’’ 4th June - 15th Aug 2009 Istanbul, with thousands of years of history, played host to many civilizations and sheltered many communities in its territory. It is a city with a rich cultural heritage……... Istanbul is a huge (metropolitan) city which is closely traced at all times due to its cultural, artistic values, economical and strategic importance. Academician/Artist Muammer Bozkurt devoted his last 10 years to promotion of Istanbul through contemporary art media by evaluating the city from economical/socio-cultural perspective. The Bosphorus Project, prepared by Curator Beste Gürsu, and introduced by the artist as follows; “Istanbul, a city divided by sea, must take advantage of being located in the most beautiful region of the world. One of the marked symbols of this privilege is “Bosphorus”. As a strait winding two continents and joining two seas, it is glamorous. This strategic region, which at the same time witnesses development and combination of civilizations, exhibits featuring icons from pop cultures. The wars, successions were not able to destroy the historical heritage. Now, Bosphorus and Istanbul grant us the chance to be the world’s most privileged community among others living in 21st Century. Bosphorus, as a strait passing through the heart of Istanbul, is one of the most significant regions of the world……. Even though the inhabitant seem to cope with the environmental noise, in reality, Bosphorus is a melancholic, desolated chaotic surrounding. The fabulous feature is the exhibition of its ignored mystery in documentary form, and the same time, with surrealistic expression. My exhibition on the theme “Bosphorus” is in the nature of a flashback display. The art works displayed in this exhibition is aimed to mark the breathless, fabulous features of the bearishly wiped out beauty. The first phase of Bosphorus Project, projected by Beste Gürsu ,comprises large-size documentary in the form of photo-penture and video – art, which was exhibited in The Marmara Pera Gallery Art and Life within the frame of 11. International Istanbul Biennial (2007), is . Again within the frame of Istanbul Biennial, he contributed to the “SLEEPLESS NIGHT” project realized in the world’s most intellectual cities such as Rome, Brussels, Warsaw, Barcelona, Montreal, Toronto and Seoul. The second phase of Bosphorus project comprises acrylic art works of Muammer Bozkurt on paper, which is planned to be exhibited in The Marmara Manhattan on 4th june-15th Aug 2009.
